Limestone County Schools is seeking three Itinerant School Nurses to direct and provide healthcare services, health education, and healthcare information across the school system. This position reports to the Lead Nurse and Principal and is responsible for managing the health and wellness needs of students across multiple school sites.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a school system environment, traveling between multiple work sites throughout the district. The role involves working with students of various ages and their families, school staff, and community health agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and provide healthcare services and health education for the school system
  • Assist administrators and school staff in developing school health programs
  • Aid in primary prevention and control of communicable diseases
  • Train designated personnel in medication administration and operation of healthcare equipment such as AEDs
  • Monitor designated licensed personnel in the performance of invasive procedures
  • Participate in planning and implementing student health plans including 504 plans, IEPs, and food allergy plans
  • Visit students' homes when necessary
  • Speak to PTA, parent, civic, and faculty groups as requested
  • Work with community agencies to provide improved health services
  • Administer first aid in accordance with established procedures
  • Instruct teachers on screening students for health problems
  • Serve as a liaison between health professionals and the school system regarding student health needs
  • Recommend student exclusion and readmission in compliance with infectious and contagious disease protocols
  • Provide in-service education on health-related topics for school personnel
  • Coordinate and implement state-mandated health screenings including spinal screening, vision, and hearing screenings
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school and workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility
  • Respond to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner
  • Maintain and submit required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner
  • Properly care for equipment and material resources
  • Work collaboratively as a productive team member
  • Adhere to school system rules, administrative procedures, Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws
  • Report absences and take leave in accordance with Board policies
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Valid license from the Alabama Board of Nursing to practice as a registered nurse
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a hospital or community health setting
  • Valid CPR Card
  • Valid Alabama driver's license and ability to access appropriate transportation to travel between work sites throughout the school system
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and certification/licensure
  • Knowledge of effective procedures and practices for vision, hearing, and other appropriate health screening activities
  • Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices
  • Ability to organize, maintain, and report data and information related to health services
  • Ability to use computers and other technology needed to perform job responsibilities
  • Knowledge of school system functions, departments, personnel, and schools necessary for efficient and effective communication and implementation of school nursing programs
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills with emphasis on communication and collaboration with diverse people and groups
  • Ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills in group settings
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about in a fast-paced environment
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities
  • Ability to be punctual and maintain regular attendance
  • Any other certificate required by state law

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, you will regularly sit, stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. You will frequently talk and hear. You will occasionally reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, and kneel. You must occasionally lift, push, pull, carry, and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. You must maintain emotional control under stress and may become exposed to bacteria and communicable disease.
