CNA Certified Nursing Assistant

This position provides routine nursing care to residents in a long-term care facility under the direction of the Charge Nurse, RN Supervisor, Director of Nurses, or Administrator. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, you will deliver direct resident care while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

Responsibilities

General Care

• Perform all duties in accordance with facility policies, procedures, nursing care protocols, and safety regulations
• Make resident rounds at the beginning of each shift and every two hours thereafter
• Verify resident identification before administering care or serving food
• Report missing ID bands to the admission coordinator immediately
• Make beds and clean bedside and overbed tables
• Serve drinking water and maintain clean, filled water pitchers within resident reach
• Dress residents neatly in their own clothing, assisting as necessary
• Assist in preparing residents for meals, including transporting to and from the dining room, serving trays, placing bibs, assisting with feeding or cutting food, and removing trays
• Serve nourishment according to facility procedures
• Feed residents who cannot feed themselves
• Ensure resident food is accessible and self-help devices are available
• Prepare residents for therapy, activities, physician visits, religious services, and other appointments, including transportation
• Keep incontinent residents clean and dry, changing bed linens, diapers, and clothing as necessary
• Prevent residents from smoking in bed
• Ensure the nurse's call system is attached to the bed and within easy reach for bedfast residents
• Answer resident call lights promptly
• Check for food in resident rooms and ensure food is kept in sealed containers
• Report all complaints, resident abuse, medication found in rooms, hazardous conditions, faulty equipment, bruises, skin tears, incidents, and accidents to the Charge Nurse immediately
• Attend in-service educational programs, on-the-job training, and meetings as directed

Clinical Care

• Wash hands before and after caring for each resident
• Position residents correctly and comfortably, with head of bed elevated at 30 degrees for residents on enteral feeding
• Assist with dental and mouth care, cleaning dentures after each meal and keeping them soaked with Efferdent after dinner
• Record resident food and nourishment intake as directed
• Perform after-meal care including cleaning resident hands, face, clothing, and dentures
• Assist residents to and from the bathroom; offer bedpans and urinals to bedfast residents; clean and store equipment after each use
• Document bowel movements and stool character every shift
• Bathe residents as assigned according to facility procedures, encouraging showers and self-help measures
• Comb and brush resident hair daily; shampoo on shower days
• Clip and trim fingernails
• Shave male residents daily or as needed
• Keep hair under arms and on face of female residents clean-shaven as necessary; trim hair in nose and ears as needed
• Observe and report reddened areas on bony prominences
• Keep drainage bags off the floor when residents are in bed or wheelchair
• Apply Vaseline or A & D ointment to dry skin according to facility policy
• Move and turn bedfast residents at least every two hours and record on CNA notes
• Observe disoriented and comatose residents and notify the Charge Nurse immediately
• Apply postural support properly and check with Charge Nurse for type of restraint to be used
• Apply hand rolls or splints to residents with contractures as outlined in facility policy
• Follow infection control procedures when isolation techniques are necessary
• Chart required information every shift
• Complete Intake and Output documentation on all residents with orders before the end of each shift

Consumer Service

• Present a professional image through dress, behavior, and speech
• Adhere to company standards for resolving consumer concerns
• Ensure all consumer and resident rights are protected

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a school for nursing assistants or hold a license as a certified nursing assistant
• Minimum of 6 months experience as a certified nursing assistant or clinical experience while enrolled in a nursing assistant certification class
• Ability to read, write, and speak English
• Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and the general public
• Willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel
• Patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm
• Ability to handle residents based on their current maturity level
• Good general health and demonstrated emotional stability
• Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and sometimes hostile people
