The opportunity

Job Description

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a Clinical Nurse I for the Main Operating Room on a per diem basis. This position offers the opportunity to work in a Magnet-designated facility consistently ranked among the top hospitals for orthopedics and rheumatology by U.S. News & World Report. You will provide direct patient care in a fast-paced surgical environment, serving as an integral member of the nursing team with a strong focus on patient advocacy and delivering the highest quality of care.

Clinical Setting

You will work in the Main Operating Room at HSS, an innovative and supportive environment that emphasizes evidence-based nursing practice and excellence in patient care. The surgical team includes orthopedic and other specialty surgeons, surgical assistants, and interdisciplinary healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary nursing care in the Operating Room
  • Serve as a Circulator and understand the Scrub Role, including passing instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants
  • Maintain a sterile environment to prevent infections and ensure the surgical team adheres to aseptic techniques
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during procedures
  • Assess and monitor patients during their surgical procedure
  • Serve as the patient's advocate, ensuring safety throughout the procedure
  • Accurately complete the Intraoperative record during surgical procedures, documenting the patient's condition, supplies used, and any occurrences during surgery
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to maintain professional nursing practice standards
  • Participate in performance improvement activities to improve patient safety, quality of care, and patient outcomes
  • Maintain sensitivity and awareness of cultural and religious diversity when addressing patients, visitors, co-workers, and other customers

Schedule

Per diem position with a minimum of 3 shifts per month, Monday through Friday. No weekend shifts required.

Required Qualifications

  • 1.5 or more years of operating room experience, preferably in orthopedics
  • New Graduate RNs are hired into the Residency Program
  • RNs with 1 or more years of RN experience outside of the OR are hired into the Fellowship
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing
  • New York State RN license and registration
  • New Jersey RN license and registration
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

Compensation

The base pay scale for this position is $83.00 per hour. This position will be eligible for additional benefits consistent with the role. The salary of the finalist selected will be determined based on various factors, including scope of role, level of experience, education, accomplishments, internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation.
