The opportunity

Job Description

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a Clinical Nurse I for the Operating Room at our Mahwah Ambulatory Surgery Center. In this per diem part-time role, you will provide comprehensive pre- and post-operative nursing care to patients in an acute care surgical setting. You will work as an integral member of our Magnet-designated nursing team, focusing on patient advocacy and delivering the highest quality of care in an evidence-based environment that commands excellence.

Clinical Setting

This position is located at HSS Mahwah Ambulatory Surgery Center, a top-ranked facility for orthopedics and rheumatology. You will work in a fast-paced operating room environment with an interdisciplinary healthcare team committed to patient safety and quality outcomes.

Schedule

  • Variable shifts with approximately 3 shifts per month
  • Per diem part-time employment status

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive pre- and post-operative nursing care to patients and their families
  • Collect comprehensive health data from patients and/or family members; analyze data to determine needs and develop individualized care plans
  • Update care plans based on patient progression and clinical pathway; manage care delivery accordingly
  • Ensure all physician orders are carried out appropriately and timely in collaboration with ancillary staff
  • Integrate patient care standards in all clinical activities and participate in performance improvement activities to improve patient safety, quality of care, and patient outcomes
  • Demonstrate operating room clinical competence, incorporating physical and emotional assessments, age-specific competency, and critical thinking skills
  • Educate patients and family members regarding their plan of care and clinical pathway
  • Maintain sensitivity and awareness of cultural and religious diversity when addressing patients, visitors, co-workers, and other customers
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to maintain standards of professional nursing practice
  • Promote a supportive and team-oriented environment
  • Support departmental responsibilities consistent with the hospital's strategic plan, mission, vision, and values

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing
  • One or more years of operating room experience (orthopedic experience preferred)
  • Active New Jersey RN license and registration
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Operating room clinical competence with ability to perform physical and emotional assessments
  • Strong patient-centered approach with emphasis on exemplary and world-class customer service
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Self-motivated and proactive; ability to think critically in a fast-paced, challenging environment
  • Active participant in seeking solutions to problems

Preferred Qualifications

  • HCAHPS/EPIC knowledge
  • Prior orthopedic operating room experience

Compensation

  • Base pay scale: $83.00 per hour
  • Additional benefits consistent with the role
  • Final salary determined based on scope of role, level of experience, education, accomplishments, internal equity, budget, and Fair Market Value evaluation
