Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is seeking a Charge RN II for the Operating Room. This is a leadership position for an experienced Registered Nurse who functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of clinical practice. The Charge Nurse creates an environment for safe patient care delivery while serving as a role model and coach to department personnel.
In addition to providing direct nursing care to a diverse patient population, you will conduct nursing assessments, assist with exams and treatment, maintain medical records, and coach staff in clinical and professional practice. You will assume leadership responsibilities at the bedside, unit, service line, and institutional levels, including leading unit and shared governance activities, assessing practice improvement opportunities, serving as a clinical resource, and coordinating education in partnership with management.
Responsibilities
People and Leadership
- Foster staff engagement through active listening, feedback acknowledgment, equitable decision-making, and proactive assistance
- Role model fair and consistent leadership for effective team dynamics and problem solving
- Coach staff in efficient communication and team building strategies
- Function as a mentor and resource to unit staff, providing oversight for students, new employees, and preceptorships
- Identify and resolve organizational conflict with patients, families, physicians, and interprofessional team members
- Provide input into staff performance reviews
Patient Care and Service
- Lead patient and family-centered care standards and mentor others regarding specialty populations
- Maintain ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff to improve patient care through leader rounding
- Ensure effective collaboration with other departments regarding patient process issues
- Drive department service standards and activities to improve patient satisfaction scores
Quality and Safety
- Model standards of care related to the nursing process and participate in meeting nurse-sensitive quality indicators and patient safety goals
- Coordinate nursing care throughout the shift considering patient acuity, staff skill level, and safety
- Facilitate seamless patient flow and ensure accurate, timely patient care plans
- Proactively recognize and respond to situations such as Rapid Response, CERTs, and emergency codes
- Participate in quality and safety improvement initiatives through peer-to-peer accountability and collaboration
Finance and Operations
- Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets through timely documentation, decreased length of stay, and optimized efficiency
- Attend daily care coordination rounds to facilitate patient progression
- Manage productivity in accordance with staffing grid
- Provide input into unit resource utilization and oversee shift-by-shift resource allocation
Growth and Innovation
- Foster identification and implementation of innovative solutions for practice changes
- Investigate and incorporate evidence-based practices
- Support change initiatives and adapt to unexpected changes
- Expand individual nursing knowledge and coach staff professional development
- Develop and disseminate educational resources and programs
Required Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s)
Experience
- Twenty-four months of clinical nursing experience with demonstration of progressive leadership skills
Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure (Texas Board of Nursing PSV Compact Licensure; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency)
- BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (American Heart Association)

- Expertise in operating the electronic medical record
- Maintain professional contributions as defined in Clinical Career Path program guide
Preferred Qualifications
- Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification
- ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (American Heart Association)
Schedule and Work Requirements
- Work Shift: Evening (2 shift)
- On-Call: Yes (employees may be required to be on-call during emergencies such as disasters or severe weather events)
- Travel: May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area
- Work Attire: Uniform and scrubs required
