Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Short Hour - Anesthesiology-Inpatient

Kaiser Permanente is seeking a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist for a short-hour, on-call position in the Anesthesiology-Inpatient department at South San Francisco Hospital Tower. In this role, you will select and administer intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics prior to and during surgical or medical procedures as a member of the anesthesia care team. You will monitor patient reactions and vital signs during and after anesthesia, take remedial action when warranted, and maintain comprehensive records of anesthetics administered.

Responsibilities

• Conduct and/or review anesthetic evaluations of patients prior to surgical procedures, deliveries, or other medical procedures in the hospital setting; consult with anesthesiologists and/or surgeons
• Review patient charts including permits, pre-operative medications, lab work, and other significant variations such as hearing aids, dentures, contact lenses, or prostheses
• Evaluate patients to identify apparent difficulties with airway control and ensure all pre-anesthesia evaluations are documented thoroughly according to policies and standards
• Explain tests, procedures, disease processes, and major anesthetic risks to patients and families as indicated; document that risks have been explained
• Develop the anesthesia care regimen for assigned patients, review with the supervising physician, gain concurrence, and implement the plan
• Start IV solutions, administer selected anesthetics based on patient safety, surgical need, possible post-operative complications, and patient history and conditions
• Participate with post-anesthesia care unit personnel in patient safety-oriented handoffs when patients are transferred from the surgery suite
• Monitor patient vital signs such as blood pressure and observe significant physical changes; inform anesthesiologist and/or surgeon of patient condition and take necessary remedial action such as infant resuscitation when necessary
• Mix solutions to required concentrations such as pentothal, succinylcholine, and vaso-active drugs
• Keep current, accurate, and complete records of procedures performed and patient conditions immediately prior to anesthesia administration
• Perform procedures outside the operating room such as intubation and arterial line placement in accordance with policies, procedures, competencies, and physician orders; chart details on progress notes

Required Qualifications

• Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (California) required at hire
• Registered Nurse License (California) required at hire
• National Provider Identifier required at hire
• Basic Life Support certification
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification
• Graduate of an accredited registered nursing program
• Graduate of an accredited school of anesthesia by date of hire
• High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)
• Demonstrated understanding of all regulatory requirements and legal consequences of anesthesia care
• Proven ability to exercise professional prerogatives based on sound clinical judgment
• Demonstrated track record of following precautionary and preventive measures in patient care
• Demonstrated ability to work in teams with proven communication and listening skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in interpersonal relations, customer service, adaptability, and change management
• Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment
• Must be eligible for Medicare/Medi-Cal enrollment; Medicare enrollment requires current certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists

• Position is on-call with variable shifts available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week
