The opportunity

Job Description

This position provides direct nursing care to residents in a long-term care facility in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, facility policies, and the direction of nursing leadership. You will work with elderly and disabled residents, assisting with activities of daily living and supporting their comfort, safety, and rehabilitation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance with activities of daily living to assigned residents
  • Obtain and record vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, and weight
  • Make occupied and unoccupied beds, change linens, and maintain clean resident rooms
  • Assist residents with personal hygiene, dressing, and grooming
  • Monitor and report changes in residents' physical condition, appetite, and behavior to the nursing staff
  • Maintain intake and output records and monitor bowel movements
  • Respond promptly to call lights and assist residents as needed
  • Observe skin condition during care activities and report any abnormalities
  • Encourage self-care and independence in rehabilitation efforts
  • Assist with care of dying and deceased residents
  • Record resident food and fluid intake and report changes in eating habits
  • Keep residents' water pitchers filled with fresh water each shift unless contraindicated
  • Serve between-meal and bedtime snacks
  • Wear and utilize transfer belts during resident transfers
  • Participate in resident care plan conferences when invited
  • Report all concerns, complaints, hazardous equipment, and unsafe conditions to nursing staff
  • Participate in in-service education and orientation programs
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a nursing arts course in an accredited nurse training program, evidenced by a diploma, certificate, or written verification from the school, OR successful completion of a United States military training program that includes Basic Nursing Assistant Training Program content
  • Successful completion of a Department-approved nursing assistant competency evaluation
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least 16 years of age
  • Good moral character, honest, reliable, and trustworthy
  • Evidence of employment or occupation and residence for two years prior to initial employment
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English in an understandable manner
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other personnel
  • Ability to deal tactfully with residents, family members, visitors, and staff
  • Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, young, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people
  • Good general health and emotional stability
  • Ability to function independently with flexibility and personal integrity

Certifications

  • Current CPR certificate required, or must become certified within two weeks of employment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and move equipment and supplies in excess of 50 pounds throughout the day
  • Adequate sight and hearing, or use of prosthetics that enable these senses to function adequately
  • Ability to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position
  • Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, and conditions including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses
