CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT

The Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities & Hospitals seeks a Certified Nursing Assistant to provide direct care and treatment to patients in a healthcare setting. This position involves a variety of clinical and custodial duties performed under the supervision of nursing staff, with responsibility for patient comfort, safety, and well-being.

Clinical Setting

This is a float position within a state healthcare facility, serving patients in behavioral healthcare and developmental disabilities settings.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct care and treatment to patients consistent with nursing care and special treatment plans
• Perform personal care including baths, mouth care, perineal care, toiletry, hair care, and shaving
• Lift and transfer patients to and from beds, chairs, stretchers, and tubs using correct body mechanics and personal safety techniques
• Provide simple treatments such as bandaging and administering enemas; assist nurses with minor treatments
• Measure and record patients' vital signs including temperature (oral, rectal, axillary), pulse, respirations, height, and weight
• Measure and record patient intake and output
• Collect and label specimens
• Make ward rounds and observe each patient's condition; report unusual occurrences and irregularities to supervisory staff
• Transport and escort patients; assist with exercise and recreational activities
• Maintain cleanliness and safety of the patient's immediate environment, including making and changing beds and caring for patient clothing and personal effects
• Recognize and implement infection control and disease prevention measures, including TB, bloodborne pathogens, and standard and isolation precautions
• Antiseptically clean toilets, bedpans, and other equipment used in patient care
• Use comfort, safety, and restraint devices as required by policy
• Provide patients with basic range of motion exercises
• Assist with food service for patients and feed patients who require assistance
• Collaborate with professional staff and contribute to treatment planning and quality assurance activities

Schedule

• Float position, 1st Shift: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
• Every other weekend and holiday
• Days off to be determined

Required Qualifications

• Registered as a Nursing Assistant by the Rhode Island Department of Health per General Laws of Rhode Island; must maintain such registration as a condition of employment
• Sufficient education to ensure the ability to read, write, and speak English
• Training or employment involving the opportunity to gain familiarity with routine hospital or clinical patient care procedures
• Working knowledge of practices involved in patient care, including first aid, housekeeping, personal needs, minor treatments, and infection control
• Ability to effectively apply patient care knowledge to the care, treatment, and custody of patients
• Ability to recognize the uniqueness of each patient and apply principles of preventive, restorative, and rehabilitative care
• Ability to perform a variety of routine hospital tasks involved in patient care and custody
• Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions
• Ability to maintain simple records

Pre-Employment Requirements

All candidates must provide proof of immunity against the following prior to appointment:

• Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
• Varicella (Chickenpox)
• Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap)
• Hepatitis B titers
• Tuberculin Skin Test (TST)

Candidates must contact the Employee Health Clinic within 2 business days of accepting the position. The Employee Health Office at Eleanor Slater Hospital is open 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday.

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary: $46,790.00 - $50,663.00

Additional Information

This position is part of LIUNA RILDC Local 808 BHDDH Zambarano. Supervision is received from a superior who outlines routine work assignments and provides specific instructions for new or unusual assignments. Work is subject to review during and upon completion for conformance with standards of care, policies, procedures, and instructions. This position typically exercises no supervisory authority.
