Job Description

STGi is seeking a Certified Nursing Assistant to provide direct patient care at The William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple, TX. You will deliver compassionate, specialized care to veterans in a long-term care setting, assisting with activities of daily living and supporting the nursing team in delivering high-quality resident services.

The William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home is a specialized facility dedicated to caring for our nation's veterans. The facility focuses on providing excellent experiences for residents and their families through compassionate, individualized care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide routine daily nursing care and services in accordance with residents' assessment and care plans as directed by supervisors
  • Measure and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure
  • Measure and record weight, intake, output, and food consumption in the official medical record
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living ranging from minimal assistance to total dependent care, including bathing, dressing, grooming, and personal hygiene
  • Assist residents with bowel and bladder functions, including toileting, bedpan, urinal, and portable commode use
  • Assist with lifting, turning, moving, positioning, and transporting residents into and out of beds, chairs, bathtubs, wheelchairs, and lifts
  • Prepare residents for meals including bathroom assistance, hand washing, hair combing, and positioning
  • Record resident food and fluid intake and report changes in eating habits
  • Keep residents' water pitchers clean and filled with fresh water within easy reach
  • Assist residents with walking with or without self-help devices
  • Assist with bathing functions including bed baths, tub baths, and shower baths
  • Assist with daily dental and mouth care including brushing teeth and dentures
  • Assist with nail care including clipping, trimming, and cleaning
  • Assist with dressing and undressing as necessary
  • Assist with personal grooming including combing, brushing, and shampooing
  • Change bed linens in resident rooms
  • Provide daily range of motion exercises and record data as instructed
  • Provide eye and ear care including warm/cold compresses and cleaning eyeglasses or hearing aids
  • Assist with application of nonsterile warm and cold compresses
  • Assist with application of slings, elastic bandages, and binders
  • Collect specimens as instructed including urine, sputum, and stool samples
  • Maintain intake and output records as instructed
  • Check and report bowel movements and character of stools
  • Observe and report presence of pressure areas and skin breakdowns to prevent pressure injuries
  • Report injuries of unknown source including skin tears
  • Weigh residents in accordance with their plan of care and report significant weight loss or gain
  • Monitor and evaluate residents' response to care plan interventions and treatments
  • Provide non-pharmacological interventions for pain in accordance with the plan of care
  • Support residents through meaningful activities that match individual abilities
  • Assist residents with preparation for exams, tests, and procedures
  • Provide support and escort residents to appointments
  • Assist in transporting residents to and from appointments, activities, and social programs
  • Assist residents in preparing for activities and social programs including church services, parties, and visitor time
  • Greet residents and escort them to their room
  • Provide new resident orientation to the unit and facility
  • Introduce residents to roommates, other residents, and personnel as appropriate
  • Assist nurses with admission, transfer, and discharge functions
  • Inventory and mark residents' personal possessions as instructed
  • Update and revise personal inventory lists as appropriate
  • Care for residents with mental and psychosocial disorders as well as residents with history of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Contribute to development and implementation of interventions in accordance with residents' needs and goals
  • Record all entries on flow sheets, notes, and charts in an informative and descriptive manner
  • Report all changes in residents' condition to the Charge Nurse or Nurse Supervisor as soon as practical
  • Attend change of shift reports
  • Check each resident routinely to ensure personal care needs are being met in accordance with their wishes
  • Perform restorative and rehabilitative procedures as instructed in accordance with individualized plans of care

Required Qualifications

  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a licensed Certified Nursing Assistant in accordance with laws in the state of Texas
  • Ability to assess patient condition, recognize adverse signs and symptoms, and react swiftly in emergency situations
  • Knowledge of basic concepts of customer service technique related to age-specific populations
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of specialized terminology associated with work in the facility
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Software, Electronic Medical Records, and computer maneuverability
  • Detail-oriented with ability to multi-task
  • Competent to provide nursing and nursing-related services
