This is a temporary nursing extern position for students in their final semester or year of an accredited RN program (Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate). You will work in the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) under the direct supervision and co-assignment of a registered nurse, gaining practical experience in direct and indirect patient care across nursing areas.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan
- Assist the RN with patients' activities of daily living according to patient needs and departmental procedures
- Perform designated procedures following departmental guidelines
- Accurately observe, record, and report patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress to the RN in a timely manner
- Assist the RN with examinations and procedures according to departmental procedures
- Demonstrate competency in basic and intermediate care skills as verified by nurse mentor, clinical preceptor, nurse manager, and/or nurse director
- Assist with advanced skills as defined by the advanced skills inventory where applicable
- Perform independently those skills identified on the skills inventory where applicable
- Perform under direct RN supervision those skills identified on the skills inventory where applicable
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and control infections and ensure safety of patients, visitors, and employees
- Thoroughly clean assigned patient care areas according to departmental procedures
- Thoroughly clean assigned unit equipment according to schedule and need; keep hallways and work areas free of equipment according to departmental procedures
- Act as a sitter for patients as assigned by the charge RN
- May have limited access to medication including transport of non-controlled substances at the request of a licensed care provider
- Attend staff meetings and unit in-services as applicable
- Seek educational opportunities to increase competence and assist in peer education
Required Qualifications
- Must be entering final semester or year of Diploma Program, Associate, or Baccalaureate RN program at an accredited School of Nursing
- Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire date
Physical Requirements
- Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loads
- Possess visual, auditory, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability
