Cardiac Surgery APP First Assistant in the Operating Room

The University of Rochester Cardiac Surgery Team is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to serve as a First Assistant in the Operating Room for our Adult Cardiac Surgery program. This is a full-time, Monday through Friday daytime position based in Rochester, New York.

Clinical Setting

The University of Rochester Cardiac Care program is a world-class quaternary referral center serving patients from western, central, and northern New York, the southern tier of New York, and referrals from Vermont and northern Pennsylvania. The program performs over 1,000 cases annually and is experiencing rapid growth, with expansion into the top four floors of a new $700 million tower beginning in Spring 2027.

Responsibilities

• Provide intra-operative first assisting during cardiac surgical procedures
• Perform endovascular (saphenous vein and radial artery) graft harvesting using endoscopic techniques
• Assist with a broad array of routine and pioneering procedures including CABG, valvular surgeries (including minimally invasive), aortic procedures, LVADs, heart transplants, surgical arrhythmia procedures, and robotic procedures
• May include a mixture of first assistant and inpatient coverage duties, depending on applicant preference and divisional operational needs
• May require on-call duties

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 1-2 years of cardiac surgery first assisting experience
• Demonstrated experience with endoscopic vein and endoscopic radial artery harvesting
• For PAs: Graduation from an ARC-PA accredited program
• For NPs: Current RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) credentials
• New York State licensure or eligibility for New York State licensure

Schedule

• Full-time position with 40 scheduled weekly hours
• Monday through Friday daytime shift
• May require on-call duties

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary range: $98,508.00 - $132,995.00 annually
