San Diego American Indian Health Center is seeking a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to provide comprehensive psychiatric health care services to patients in a community health center setting. You will work under the direction of the Behavioral Health Director and in collaboration with a psychiatrist, serving a diverse, multinational, and multicultural patient population including children, youth, families, adults, and elders.
Responsibilities
- Assess patients through interviews with patients, families, and collateral contacts; behavioral observation; review of medical history and related documents; interpretation of psychological tests; and ordering and evaluation of laboratory tests
- Develop comprehensive treatment plans jointly with patients by determining the nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders
- Prescribe psychotropic medications as clinically indicated
- Utilize psychotherapeutic methods and medications to treat patients
- Monitor medication effects and discuss progress toward treatment goals with patients
- Complete all clinical documentation in compliance with clinical and state requirements within 48 hours of patient contact
- Maintain interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress, and consulting and collaborating with primary care physicians, mental health therapists, substance abuse counselors, nurses, and other health care providers
- Provide training and discussions to staff regarding the interrelationship between psychosocial and physiological problems, psychotropic medications, crisis intervention, and related issues
- Enforce policies, procedures, standards, rules, and legal regulations to ensure quality and safe service for patients and staff
- Participate in quality improvement activities
- Remain available for emergency consultations
- Adhere to all policies and procedures for medication dispensing and comply with prescription medication formularies
- Promptly report all suspected cases of child or elder abuse, domestic violence, or suicidal or homicidal ideation to appropriate authorities
- Adhere to all privacy regulations, HIPAA guidelines, and OSHA safety policies and procedures
- Complete all Continuing Medical Education hours as required by the California state medical board and applicable specialty boards
- Notify the Behavioral Health Director of any schedule changes at least 2 weeks in advance
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Behavioral Health Director
Productivity Standards
- 12 patients per day in any 8-hour workday
- 15 patients per day in any 10-hour workday
- All documentation must be completed within 48 hours of seeing a patient
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in health sciences
- California Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner license in good standing
- DEA license in good standing
- Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Certificate of Registration with the California Medical Board
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years of experience
- Master's degree in health sciences
- Experience serving a multinational, multicultural population
- FQHC background
- Familiarity with Community Health Clinics and/or Indian Health Clinics
- Experience with ECW EHR
