Sanford Health is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the General Surgery department at Bemidji Main Clinic in Bemidji, Minnesota. This full-time position offers a blend of independent clinic practice, surgical first-assist opportunities, and inpatient surgical care within a collaborative team environment.

You will work alongside seven General Surgeons with broad surgical expertise, providing comprehensive perioperative care to surgical patients. This role combines autonomous practice with close physician collaboration, allowing you to develop clinical expertise while maintaining meaningful autonomy in patient management.

Clinical Setting

Bemidji Main Clinic is part of Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States. The surgical service line is established with a strong referral base and opportunities for continued expansion.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including history-taking and physical exams related to surgical conditions
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests relevant to general surgery patients
  • Provide preoperative evaluations and prepare patients for surgery, including patient education and risk assessment
  • Manage postoperative care, including monitoring recovery, managing pain, wound care, and identifying complications
  • Assist in surgical procedures as needed under the supervision of the surgeon
  • Collaborate with surgeons and multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized care plans
  • Prescribe medications, treatments, and therapies according to state laws and institutional policies
  • Document patient care accurately and maintain up-to-date medical records
  • Provide patient and family education on surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and lifestyle modifications
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with hospital and regulatory standards
  • Stay current with advances in general surgery and nursing practice through continuing education
  • Provide on-call coverage outside of regularly scheduled hours

Practice Model

The position offers opportunities to develop a clinical niche or area of special interest, including opportunities within Bariatric Surgery and other specialized areas of General Surgery. You will join an established team of three APPs with opportunities for continued growth. The practice model allows you to utilize your individual strengths and interests while developing your professional expertise, with strong support from an experienced operational, nursing, and clinic team.

Schedule

  • Full-time position
  • 40 hours per week
  • Day shift
  • On-call coverage required outside of regularly scheduled hours

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a master's, postmaster's, or doctorate from an accredited nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice
  • State Controlled Substance License (if required by state)
  • National board certification as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG), Acute Care Adult (ACNP-BC), Family (FNP-BC or FNP-C), or Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP-BC or A-GNP). Additional certifications require approval from a market executive leader.
  • Obtain and subsequently maintain required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in nursing (if licensed prior to August 1, 1995)

Education

If licensed prior to August 1, 1995, a master's degree in nursing is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Annual compensation range (based on 1.0 FTE): APPII $108,171-$192,425. Actual compensation offers may vary based on education, training, certification, experience, scope of practice, and expected job requirements.
