Anesthesia Technician- Operating Room- PRN- Varies

The Anesthesia Technician provides essential support to the anesthesia care team (ACT) in the operating room and other clinical settings. This PRN position involves equipment setup, maintenance, assembly, and operational support across multiple anesthetic delivery systems and monitoring devices used during surgical procedures and emergency situations.

Clinical Setting

This role supports anesthesia operations across multiple OR locations including general operating rooms, obstetrics, endoscopy, electrophysiology labs, cardiac rooms, and joint and spine surgical areas. The technician may also provide support in remote locations such as high-dose radiation, CT, cancer center, pain practice center, and heart station.

Direct Patient Care Responsibilities

• Set up and perform daily system pre-checks on anesthetic gas machines (Draeger), including calibration, assembly of anesthesia circuits, masks, and complete circuit checks across 6-8 general ORs, 3 OB rooms, 2 endoscopy suites, 1 EP lab, 28 B-level rooms, and 12 JSC locations
• Assemble and assist with nitric oxide delivery systems as directed by the ACT
• Assemble 3D echocardiography (TEE) probes, dental guards, and power up machines and remote cables; assist with line isolation issues that impair TEE imaging
• Maintain and have available daily airway management equipment on anesthesia carts as indicated by OR schedule
• Assemble and assist with cardiac room equipment including triple channel pumps with designated infusions, cerebral oximetry, blood administration sets, fluid warmers, pressure monitoring cables, and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
• Assemble total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) infusion pumps, pulse oximetry, BIS monitors, and arterial line placement equipment for joint and spine procedures
• Assemble ultrasound equipment including probe covers, gel, and printing capability for line placement
• Assemble and assist with video laryngoscopy equipment
• Assemble and assist with fiber optic equipment
• Assemble and assist with difficult airway equipment including fiber optic, jet ventilation, video laryngoscopy, specialty tubes, laser tubes, micro endotracheal tubes (ETT), endotracheal tube exchangers, intubating stylets, and laryngeal mask airways (LMAs)
• Prepare and maintain malignant hyperthermia (MH) equipment and carts with special anesthetic equipment assembled and supplied to anesthesia machines
• Assemble and assist with massive transfusion equipment including appropriate disposable cassettes, filter systems, proper infusion tubing for rapid transfusers, and general blood administration tubing
• Respond to emergency situations in the OR or throughout the hospital (ER, patient rooms) by assisting with chest compressions if requested, securing TEE capability, ultrasound, emergency line placement, emergency intubations, difficult airway management, MH resuscitation, lab draws, blood administration, and other duties as directed by the ACT
• Address computer system and network issues with hard wire connections and cabling, then direct to clinical engineering as needed
• Assist ACT members with patient care including moving patients and associated IV lines, pressure lines, ventilation tubing, infusion pumps, and oxygen circuits
• Open sterile supplies or trays as needed to assist ACT members
• Assist with patient transport from remote sites, OB, or 8W to off-site locations requiring emergency equipment or ongoing resuscitation; assemble anesthesia equipment in new locations while patient remains under anesthesia

General Support Duties

• Perform general inspection, maintenance, operating, servicing, scheduled cleaning, assembling, calibrating, testing, and troubleshooting of all mechanical, pneumatic, and electronic equipment used in the anesthesia department including anesthesia gas machines, anesthesia carts, MH carts, fiber optic equipment, specialty anesthesia storage areas, specialty cardiovascular line placement carts, 3D echocardiography (TEE) machines, ultrasound machines, infusion pumps (fluid, blood, or medication), and video laryngoscopy equipment
• Set up anesthesia in remote locations including high-dose radiation, CT, cancer center, pain practice center, and heart station; power down equipment in initial location, move and restore systems in remote location, including relocation of anesthesia carts, supplies, additional monitoring, and computer system (Epic) network setups
• Prepare equipment and supplies used daily in the anesthesia department
• Assist with cleaning and turning over cardiac rooms
• Document daily activities as assigned
• Document and report equipment maintenance or failure issues to the Head Anesthesia Technician and/or Clinical Engineering
• Adhere to principles and techniques of biohazards, infection control, and standard precautions including cleanliness, sanitation, high-level disinfection, and sterility measures of supplies and equipment
• Follow safe storage, use, and handling procedures for bulk, cylinder, and pipeline gases
• Adhere to principles of fire, radiation, and electrical safety
• Requisition supplies as indicated
• Participate in continuing education on care, maintenance, and proper usage of equipment
• Organize all materials and supplies used within the department
• Participate in hospital-wide sweeps quarterly and as needed for wayward anesthesia equipment
• Complete special projects as requested by the Anesthesia Department director or ACT members

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• BLS certification
• Knowledge of regulatory, legislative, and Joint Commission standards related to anesthesia, surgery, and infection control
• Knowledge of care and maintenance of technical equipment
• Excellent communication skills and organizational ability
• Some mechanical ability

Preferred Qualifications

• 2 to 4 years of hospital experience or healthcare facility experience related to anesthesia technician position
• Operating room experience
• Related technical or vocational training

Licenses and Certifications

• ASAII certification recommended within 3 years of employment
