The opportunity

Job Description

The University of Rochester is seeking a Surgical Technician for the Ambulatory Sawgrass Operating Room. This is a full-time position in an outpatient surgical center setting where you will provide technical support to the surgical team, prepare instruments and equipment, and maintain sterile technique throughout surgical procedures.

Clinical Setting

You will work in the Sawgrass OR, an outpatient surgical center providing same-day surgical procedures. The role operates on a day shift schedule with 40 scheduled weekly hours.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures based on surgeon preference cards and individual patient needs
  • Assist the surgical team from the scrub position during operations, anticipating instrument and equipment requirements
  • Maintain sterile technique and proper handling of sharps throughout all procedures
  • Perform surgical counts as per hospital policy
  • Prepare intraoperative pharmacological solutions under the direct supervision of a registered nurse
  • Assemble, test, and ensure correct working order of all instruments and equipment prior to and during procedures
  • Identify defective or malfunctioning equipment, disassemble, and tag appropriately for repair
  • Facilitate room turnover between cases
  • Assist in preparing patients for sedation and local procedures
  • Recognize and communicate changes in patient status to appropriate healthcare team members
  • Support age-specific, culturally, and spiritually competent interventions to address patient and family needs
  • Serve as a preceptor to staff and students orienting to the operating room scrub position
  • Assist with data collection for unit performance improvement activities
  • Participate in the Shared Governance process
  • Assist with maintaining inventory as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited CAAHEP surgical technology program, OR completion of an American Military surgical technology program, OR one year of experience as a surgical technician between January 2011 and January 2015
  • If hired after January 1, 2015: Certification by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) as a Tech in Surgery, OR certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as a Certified Surgical Technologist required upon hire
  • Exception: Certification is not required for surgical technicians with more than one year of experience as a surgical technician between January 2011 and January 2015
