Auburn City Schools is seeking a Registered Nurse to serve as an After-School Nurse and School Nurse Substitute. In this role, you will provide comprehensive healthcare services to students, manage medical records, oversee medication administration, and coordinate health screenings and immunization records across assigned school locations.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a school-based healthcare environment, serving students in Auburn City Schools. You will report to the School Nurse Administrator and Principal, and may supervise unlicensed medication school personnel and Licensed Practical Nurses.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and help present curriculum training for unlicensed school personnel on medication assistance in school settings
  • Monitor medication dispensing at assigned schools, maintain accurate records and documentation, ensure proper medication storage, maintain privacy of dispensing records, train students and staff on specific medication needs, verify completion of all Prescriber/Parent Authorization Forms, develop emergency plans related to medication assistance, and ensure unusual occurrence reports are properly submitted and filed
  • Assist with vision screenings
  • Facilitate scoliosis screenings, communicate with parents, and complete all documentation and required state reports
  • Maintain current immunization records for all students at assigned schools
  • Meet daily medical needs of students
  • Maintain current records of all health concerns and visits to the school office or nurse's station
  • Write and implement Individualized Health Care Plans for students with chronic illnesses, including meeting with parents, collaborating with Licensed Practical Nurses on plan implementation, and developing emergency plans addressing possible side effects, signs, and symptoms
  • Assist school counselors with 5th Grade Human Growth and Development classes
  • Assist with head lice checks as needed and communicate with parents regarding treatment, prevention, and school policy
  • Present in-service training as requested
  • Attend Auburn City Schools nurse meetings
  • Maintain current nursing license and engage in continuing professional development
  • Act in a professional and ethical manner, adhering to professional standards
  • Demonstrate attention to punctuality, records, and reports
  • Comply with Auburn City Schools policies, procedures, and programs
  • Exercise appropriate professional judgment
  • Demonstrate support for school system goals and priorities
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner
  • Keep supervisor and/or principal informed of potential problems or unusual events
  • Exhibit interpersonal skills to work effectively as a team member
  • Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position

Required Qualifications

  • Active Alabama Registered Nurse license
  • Valid Alabama driving license
  • Current CPR certification
  • Meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to provide wise and prudent nursing judgment and crisis intervention as needed
  • Ability to keep clinical practice current to provide high quality care, train others, and evaluate outcomes of care
  • Ability to train and monitor Medication Assistants and Licensed Practical Nurses
  • Ability to write and implement health care plans and emergency plans for students with long-term chronic health needs
  • Ability to follow medical orders and build professional relationships with appropriate providers
  • Ability to assess immunization records and provide health screenings
  • Ability to communicate effectively with school personnel, families, students, and community resource personnel in health care and related fields
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to operate a computer and utilize software applications related to the assignment

Physical Requirements

This position involves medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.

Terms of Employment

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
