Join UChicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in the Neurosurgery department. In this inpatient role, you will manage general neurosurgery and consultative neurosurgery patients, caring for both adult and pediatric populations with expertise in critical neurological conditions.

Clinical Setting

The Neurosurgery team treats a wide range of neurological disorders, including brain and spinal cord injuries, brain infections (encephalitis and meningitis), brain swelling, brain tumors, nerve and muscle problems affecting breathing (such as myasthenia gravis and Guillain-Barré syndrome), status epilepticus, stroke, and other catastrophic disorders affecting neurologic function.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive direct patient care management
  • Manage a caseload of patients with autonomous decision-making in assessing, diagnosing, and initiating delegated medical treatments
  • Support families and coordinate discharge planning
  • Provide staff education and consultation
  • Participate in research activities
  • Plan, organize, and direct patient care efforts in collaboration with attending surgeons, residents, fellows, nursing staff, and ancillary team members

Required Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner

  • Master of Science in Nursing
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse's Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
  • Ability to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers

Required Qualifications for Physician Assistant

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program
  • Certification by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure/registration
  • Certification in ACLS

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an academic medical center or tertiary/quaternary care setting
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience or training in a surgical setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with attending surgeons, residents, fellows, nursing, and ancillary teams
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (Epic preferred)
  • Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) certification (for Nurse Practitioner candidates)

Schedule

  • Full-time position (1.0 FTE)
  • Rotating shifts, 12-hour shifts, 3 shifts per week
  • Non-union position
