Advanced Practice Provider - Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Pediatric Critical Care

Shriners Children's Ohio is seeking a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. You will provide high-acuity overnight care to children with complex burn injuries, critical illness, and post-operative conditions in a specialized 7-bed PICU.

You will care for pediatric patients with acute burns, septic and cardiogenic shock, respiratory failure, ARDS, and other life-threatening conditions. The role also includes managing post-operative craniofacial patients and children recovering from burn reconstruction surgeries. You will work alongside burn and critical care surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, pediatric intensivists, other Advanced Practice Providers, and moonlighting residents.

Clinical Setting

The PICU is a specialized 7-bed unit (expanding) within Shriners Children's Ohio, part of a global organization with 20+ hospitals, outpatient clinics, ambulatory care centers, and outreach locations. The organization provides excellent care to children up to age 18 regardless of family ability to pay or insurance status.

Responsibilities

• Provide continuous overnight clinical management for inpatient and PICU patients across all service lines
• Perform urgent assessments, overnight admissions, and care escalation as needed
• Execute core PICU bedside procedures and wound/dressing care based on privileges
• Assist with sedation when required
• Serve as the primary in-house clinician overnight, utilizing autonomy under protocols
• Support transitions of care through high-quality hand-offs to day teams
• Document overnight events that inform daily multidisciplinary rounds
• Provide comprehensive overnight management including hemodynamic and ventilator support, wound and graft care, and coordination of multidisciplinary care

Schedule

This position follows a three-shift weekly schedule consisting of 13-hour overnight shifts. Weekend and holiday coverage is required.

Required Qualifications

For Nurse Practitioner:

• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
• Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Acute Care (CPNP-AC) or equivalent certification
• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the state of practice

For Physician Assistant:

• Master of Physician Assistant Studies (or equivalent degree) from an accredited Physician Assistant program
• Current, unrestricted Physician Assistant license in the state of practice
• Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

For Both:

• Prior pediatric inpatient or PICU advanced practice experience or strong PICU nursing background. Recent graduates will be considered based on previous experience, training, and clinical exposure.
• Eligibility for active DEA
• Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) certification
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
• Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws
• Demonstrated clinical expertise in pediatric assessment and care management
• Familiarity with pediatric specialty conditions and post-surgical care
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration with families and interdisciplinary teams
• Commitment to trauma-informed, culturally competent, and family-centered care
• Competency in EHR systems and clinical documentation standards

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with burn or surgical patient populations

Compensation

Compensation is determined based on years of relevant experience and departmental equity.
