The opportunity

Job Description

New England Baptist Hospital, a center of excellence for orthopedic surgery in Boston, is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) for per diem hospitalist services. This position provides consultative medical support to orthopedic and other surgical patients throughout the hospital, with a focus on high-risk post-operative patients in orthopedic and spine services.

Clinical Setting

New England Baptist Hospital is staffed 24 hours a day by hospitalist physicians who provide clinical supervision and assistance. The hospital serves a large orthopedic post-operative population with multiple comorbidities, requiring a thorough, detail-oriented approach to patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform initial consultations on high-risk post-operative patients in orthopedic and spine services
  • Conduct daily follow-up of patients as determined by medical status
  • Work closely with orthopedic and surgical teams to coordinate patient care
  • Participate in daily rounding and perform full assessment of medical conditions
  • Review accuracy of medications and manage perioperative medical conditions
  • Maintain daily documentation and coordinate discharge planning with case managers and attending physicians
  • Communicate with patients' primary care physicians regarding medication changes and post-operative complications
  • Assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room and participate in assigned surgeries
  • Perform histories and physicals as needed
  • Initiate appropriate laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and write prescriptions within scope of license
  • Identify problems and diagnoses based on correct interpretation of findings
  • Act as liaison between medical staff, patients, and allied health professionals
  • Maintain current and accurate medical record documentation
  • Participate in department improvement initiatives, education, and research programs
  • Assist with development and expansion of protocols and clinical pathways
  • Work with case managers to identify patient variances from established protocols
  • Evaluate daily effectiveness of pain management plans
  • Respond to orthopedic consultation requests from nursing units, ambulatory care, PACU, and other areas
  • Participate in training and education of physician assistants and medical students
  • Attend weekly grand rounds in orthopedics
  • Assist attending physicians with research and presentations as time allows
  • Attend daily morning lectures in orthopedics as time permits
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on development of educational materials
  • Assist in developing continuing education conferences for health professionals

Schedule

  • Per diem position with varying day shifts available
  • Minimum availability of 16 hours per month required
  • Options to work up to approximately one shift per week
  • Arrival and departure times based on operating room schedule and patient load

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program
  • Current licensure to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or certification as Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Minimum of 2 to 4 years of acute care inpatient experience, preferably in management of complex medical patients
  • Current DEA license
  • Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification
  • Master's degree required

Compensation

  • Hourly rate: $64.19 - $87.29
  • Actual compensation determined based on seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography, job responsibilities, and other applicable factors
  • Compensation may exceed base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices
