Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join an intensive 12-month Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Primary Care. This structured training program prepares clinicians for independent practice in primary care through a multidisciplinary approach combining didactic education with hands-on clinical experience.

Program Structure

The fellowship begins with 4-5 months of training at the General Internal Medicine clinic on Galter 18, followed by months 6-12 at a single Northwestern Medicine Group Primary Care site in Chicago. Throughout the program, fellows work under the direct guidance of APP preceptors and attending physicians.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments including health histories and advanced physical examinations
  • Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests to establish diagnoses
  • Develop comprehensive treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
  • Order and prescribe medications, therapies, interventions, and procedures according to clinical privileges and scope of practice
  • Document all care provided and procedures performed in the medical record
  • Coordinate discharge planning and after-visit care with patients, families, and healthcare team members
  • Consult with other specialties as appropriate to meet patient healthcare needs
  • Manage a patient caseload with developing organizational skills

Education and Leadership

  • Attend all didactic lectures and educational opportunities scheduled for APP fellows
  • Teach and counsel patients and families on preventive care, medical conditions, treatment plans, and prescribed medications
  • Provide formal and informal education to internal and external groups
  • Participate in unit, departmental, divisional, or hospital committees and professional organizations
  • Advocate for patients, families, nursing staff, and other healthcare community members
  • Assist in developing policies and procedures to establish clinical practice standards
  • Collaborate with leadership on identifying and solving clinical system and process issues
  • Lead changes in clinical practice in collaboration with physicians and nurses
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice guidelines

Credentialing and Professional Development

  • Complete all requirements for credentialing and privileging for inpatient core privileges as appropriate for role
  • Identify individual professional development needs and work with APP preceptors and mentors to create learning opportunities
  • Develop critical thinking, diagnostic, and clinical skills for managing complex medical situations
  • Develop effective communication and presentation skills with the interdisciplinary team
  • Develop deep and broad knowledge of common disease processes
  • Participate in and apply evidence-based research and guidelines to clinical practice
  • Participate in service-line specific quality initiatives and development of outcome metrics

Schedule and Compensation

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No call, weekends, holidays, or nights.

Compensation is $88,000 per year.

Required Qualifications

For Nurse Practitioner applicants:

  • Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Master's degree from an accredited school or college of nursing
  • Registered Professional Nurse (Illinois) license
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Illinois) license
  • Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner certification
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (American Heart Association) certification
  • Meet all required qualifications of APRN-CNP job description

For Physician Assistant applicants:

  • Graduation from an accredited PA program
  • Physician Assistant (Illinois) license
  • Meet all required qualifications of PA job description

All applicants must hold and maintain:

  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (American Heart Association) certification

Preferred Qualifications
