Advanced Practice Professional (Nurse Practitioner) Orthopaedic Upper Extremity

Michigan Medicine's Orthopaedic Surgery-Upper Extremity service is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to provide comprehensive care to orthopaedic patients as an integral member of a collaborative surgical team. This full-time position offers the opportunity to work in a leading academic health system while developing expertise in upper extremity and hand conditions.

Clinical Setting

You will work primarily in the outpatient setting with exposure to inpatient and operating room environments. The role involves direct patient care, surgical assistance, and coordination with a multidisciplinary orthopaedic team at Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic upper extremity patients in outpatient, inpatient, and operating room settings
• Provide service continuity through preoperative and postoperative care, as well as management of non-operative patient conditions
• Perform detailed medical histories and physical examinations, presenting pertinent data to the medical staff
• Collect and assist in the interpretation of diagnostic imaging studies and laboratory tests
• Evaluate and treat patients autonomously with faculty support as needed
• Perform minor office-based procedures, including application of braces, splints, casts, and injection/aspirations
• Assist surgeons in the operating room as needed
• Participate in surgical rounds
• Serve as a resource to administrative and medical staff, including during faculty absences
• Coordinate care plans and collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive clinical care
• Provide follow-up to patients and assist with referrals to internal and external facilities
• Participate in quality improvement activities
• Provide routine orthopaedic services effectively and efficiently
• Provide coverage for acute orthopaedic injuries as needed

Required Qualifications

• Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
• Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan (Adult-Gerontology Acute Care, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Adult Primary Care NP)
• Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
• Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN)
• Current DEA registration
• AHA Approved BLS certification
• Minimum two years of Advanced Practice Professional experience
• Three years of Orthopaedic Surgery experience as a PA/NP (preferred experience in Orthopaedic Upper Extremity and Hand conditions)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as a PA/NP in the orthopaedic outpatient setting with procedural care, fracture care, and perioperative surgical patient management
• Experience evaluating and managing hand, wrist, elbow, and upper extremity conditions
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and patient service skills
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize, problem solve, and delegate effectively and efficiently
• Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and as a collaborative team member
• Demonstrated superior attention to detail and organizational commitment
• Demonstrated leadership in a professional healthcare setting or other professional activities
• Demonstrated active participation in professional development activities

Schedule

• 40 hours per week, primarily weekdays with some flexibility
• No on-call requirements
• Work mode is onsite at Michigan Medicine - Ann Arbor

Employment Terms

• This is a regular, full-time, exempt position
• Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process

• This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union
