The opportunity

Job Description

The Advanced Patient Care Technician (APCT) provides quick reaction and competent care for patients with emergency situations in the Emergency Department. You will monitor patients, collect clinical information, and document data while assisting physicians and nurses with a variety of patient care procedures and interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Report pertinent information such as changes in a patient's physical or mental status to the nurse in a timely fashion
  • Accurately obtain and document patient vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, respirations, and pulse using manual or electronic devices
  • Accurately obtain and document fluid intake and output values and patient weight
  • Provide personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, oral hygiene, feeding, toileting, transferring, and ambulating using appropriate assistive devices
  • Ensure appropriate patients are turned and repositioned at least every two hours and apply protective devices to ensure comfort and prevent skin breakdown
  • Maintain patient records and charts to ensure accurate documentation of care provided; complete property sheets on admitted or transferred patients
  • Ensure the safety of all patients; use safety devices when needed and prevent patient injury at all times
  • Respond appropriately and according to instruction during emergency situations
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to patient comfort, privacy, and confidentiality; consistently adhere to HIPAA guidelines
  • Answer call lights in a timely fashion
  • Follow universal precautions and infection control standards to prevent the spread of disease or infection; dispose of infectious waste appropriately
  • Adhere to patient safety goals as appropriate
  • Carry out procedures according to hospital standards, policies, and procedures
  • Maintain a comfortable, clean, and uncluttered environment in patient rooms and on the unit
  • Anticipate and coordinate workload to assure that routines and supplies are maintained to expedite patient care
  • Collect sputum, urine, and stool specimens according to hospital policy
  • Assist in the provision of post-mortem care according to hospital standards
  • Assist with appropriate monitoring of restraints under the supervision of the nurse
  • Insert and remove peripheral intravenous therapy lines under the direction of the physician or nurse; may only flush lines with normal saline flush (does not place external jugular lines or administer intravenous fluids)
  • Perform blood collection and Foley catheter placements
  • Perform wound care and dressing changes; apply plaster and fiberglass splints, casts, and traction devices
  • Perform bedside testing such as oximetry, glucometry, and other point-of-care tests
  • Operate and monitor patient monitoring systems specific to the unit
  • Ensure cleanliness of the unit; clean and store equipment and empty sharps containers
  • Stock medical supplies and paper goods; inventory and process broken equipment as required
  • Assure proper storage of E-cylinders (oxygen)
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff
  • Attend educational in-services and staff meetings on a regular basis
  • Perform other job duties as assigned within scope of practice

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus trade or vocational school in medical/surgical patient care
  • Current BLS certification issued through American Heart Association
  • Proof of EMT course completion or completion of first level of nursing school, OR two years of experience as CNA or CMA

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of EMT, CNA, or CMA experience
  • De-escalation certification

Schedule

  • Per diem as needed (PRN)
