Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Masters Physician Assistant- Inpatient Surgery Float @ HUP

Join the Department of Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide inpatient management for complex and critically ill surgical patients. This float position covers multiple surgical sub-specialties including general surgery, bariatric surgery, thoracic surgery, complex surgical resections of GI malignancies, and benign GI or colorectal surgical procedures.

Clinical Setting

You will work as part of a high-functioning interprofessional surgical team at an academic medical center, collaborating with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, and other care team members. The role includes both day and night shifts with opportunities to care for pre- and post-operative patients in the recovery area and provide overnight surgical patient care.

Responsibilities

• Manage inpatient surgical patients across the continuum of care
• Make complex clinical decisions within your scope of practice and credentialing
• Perform procedures according to your credentialing and collaborative agreement
• Develop and execute complex discharge planning and care transitions
• Coordinate care and collaborate with the interprofessional team
• Educate patients, families, and staff
• Manage patient care autonomously within your professional scope
• Participate in educational activities and research as applicable
• Ensure regulatory compliance and proper documentation
• Prescribe medications in accordance with your collaborative agreement and state regulations
• Participate in departmental and hospital projects and committees

All nurse practitioners and physician assistants function under University of Pennsylvania Medical Center medical staff guidelines, are credentialed through the medical board, and work under a formal job description, delineation of privileges, and a collaborative practice agreement with a supervising physician.

Schedule

• 10-12 hour shifts per week during day rotations based on service needs
• 12-hour shifts at night with rotational weekends and holiday coverage
• Minimal OR time and first assisting

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, OR graduate degree from an accredited Physician Assistant training program (PA-C)
• Current licensure or eligibility for licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
• Eligibility for credentialing by the medical board
• Active Pennsylvania state licensure
• BLS and ACLS certifications

• Prior clinical experience
