1.0 FTE School Nurse

This is a full-time school nurse position serving a kindergarten through grade 12 school community. You will provide comprehensive health services to students, staff, and visitors, including primary and emergency care, medication administration, and health screening coordination. The role requires collaboration with school leadership, special education teams, and families to support the health and wellness needs of children with diverse abilities and medical conditions.

Reporting to the Director of School Health Services and the Building Principal, you will be responsible for assessing and evaluating students' health status, maintaining cumulative health records, and developing individualized health care plans including Anaphylaxis Action Plans, Asthma Health Care Plans, and 504 plans. You will coordinate vision and hearing screenings with appropriate follow-up and referrals, participate in scoliosis screening for grades 5 through 9, and confirm student eligibility for sports participation.

Additional responsibilities include preventing the spread of communicable diseases, assisting with pediculosis control procedures, charting and reviewing student heights and weights, and serving as a resource for school health education programs. You will participate in child protection team activities, serve on building and system-wide committees such as the Incident Management Team, and evaluate student eligibility for home and hospital tutoring programs under Chapter 766. You will also implement student transportation as designated by attending physicians and maintain health room statistics for the school system and Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Responsibilities

• Assess and evaluate students' health status
• Provide primary and emergency health care to students, staff, and visitors
• Administer medication in accordance with school policies
• Provide consultation for staffing team meetings, core evaluations, and kindergarten screening
• Serve as a resource person in school health education programs for students, school personnel, and parents
• Maintain cumulative health records on all students
• Coordinate screening of students for vision and hearing defects, including follow-up retests, appropriate referrals, and notification of parents
• Participate in scoliosis screening program for grades 5 through 9
• Confirm student eligibility for sports
• Prevent the spread of pediculosis through inspection, exclusion, and readmit procedures
• Chart and review heights and weights with follow-up as necessary
• Assist in the prevention and control of communicable diseases
• Participate in the modification of the school program to meet the needs of children with disabilities and medical conditions that require modifications in school
• Develop Individual Health Care Plans, Anaphylaxis Action Care Plans, Asthma Health Care Plans, and 504 plans
• Evaluate student eligibility for home and hospital tutoring programs under Chapter 766
• Implement student transportation as designated by the attending physician under Chapter 766
• Serve on the Child Protection Team and act as an advocate and consultant for children suspected of being abused or neglected
• Serve on building and system-wide committees, such as Incident Management Team, as needed
• Maintain continuing education requirements for recertification by DESE and registration by the BORN
• Maintain supplies, take inventory, and order necessary equipment for health office
• Participate in the computerization of medical records, utilizing current software and hardware
• Maintain health room statistics as required for the school system and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
• Promote a healthful and safe on-site environment for students and staff

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• Current Massachusetts Registration in Nursing
• Department of Secondary and Elementary Education Certification
• CPR certification through the American Heart Association or Red Cross
• Effective interpersonal relations with students, staff, and parents

Preferred Qualifications

• School nursing experience
• Experience working with children of all abilities

Employment Terms

• Exempt status under FLSA
• Start date: October 19, 2026
• Salary and benefits in accordance with the LEA Unit A collective bargaining agreement
• Salary to be prorated based on start date
• FY26 salary scale may change based on completed negotiations

While performing the duties of this job, you will frequently sit and talk or hear. You will occasionally walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands or arms. You must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
