Knik Elementary School is seeking a full-time School Nurse to provide comprehensive health services to students. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate health records, conducting health screenings, attending to the daily health needs of students, and communicating with staff, parents, and the community to support student wellness and safety.
Responsibilities
- Provide temporary and emergency care to ill or injured students
- Evaluate students' total health and developmental status through comprehensive health assessment
- Administer immunizations and tuberculin skin testing, manage communicable disease exclusions and readmission authorization
- Dispense, monitor, and record all students' medications for acute and chronic health problems; consult with physicians and parents regarding medication adjustments or changes
- Provide health counseling to students, families, and staff to promote wellness and self-sufficiency in coping with health problems
- Participate as the health specialist on the Child Study Team to develop the health component of Individual Education Plans
- Provide crisis intervention, determine need for emergency referrals, and provide ongoing follow-up
- Schedule and assist with athletic physical examinations
- Organize, coordinate, and teach specific health programs; serve as a resource for health presentations
- Provide inservice training to staff on topics including first aid, CPR, child abuse, personal safety curriculum, and AIDS
- Coordinate school and community health activities and serve as a liaison between home, school, and community
- Coordinate with the principal the documentation and reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect to the Division of Family and Youth Services and the Health Services Coordinator
- Monitor the assigned building to promote a safe and healthy school environment, including auditing emergency equipment and evaluating emergency plans with the principal
- Determine and maintain health clinic inventory of equipment and supplies per health services guidelines
- Support the development, maintenance, and refinement of a school wellness program
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and/or health services coordinator
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Alaska Type C Certificate
Physical Requirements
This position involves light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
